Matched the partial signature to a name, and I didn't expect the name I found. A senior official. Respected. Decorated. Exactly the kind of person whose name gets used to reassure people, not the kind whose name explains why they were never warned.

I didn't want to write a simple villain here, so I didn't. He made a lonely, agonizing call that going public would cost more than it saved, and then he spent the rest of his life quietly investigating it alone, off every official record, instead of just walking away. I'm not asking you to decide if that was right. I'm not sure I have either.

His apprentice inherited the work without ever knowing which one she was keeping. She finally gets to find out.

His last notebook stops mid-count. I know what he was counting. I'm not sure yet if he finished before something stopped him.
