The Changed Return

The tally's first confirmed name turned out to be someone I planted a very long time ago and never touched again. Doran's had a fear he's never explained since one of the earliest zones I built: someone he loved went down to check on an old seal and came back different. Not hurt. Different. He never got closure on that. I never planned to give it to him this soon, but the tally led straight there, so I followed it.

That name is the tally's first confirmed entry. Fifteen years, unwitting, unchosen. I didn't want to write a monster, so I didn't. I wrote someone who never knew any of this was happening to them, and someone who loved them enough to spend fifteen years being afraid to look too closely.

This is the start of a different kind of chapter. Less "find the next site," more "figure out what to actually do once you've found the person." There's a second name on that tally, one line below the first. It was never just the one.
